a phone unlocked from t mobile is telling me that an existing straight talk sim card is not compatible. Thus leaving me to believe that the phone is still carrier locked despite t mobile’s contentions otherwise. Is there any insight, further remidial actions or anything else i can do to help this along?

Back up the phone, then plug it into iTunes and restore iOS anyway. Then try setting it up. If it still gives you the unsupported message, contact Apple Care. Give them the serial number. They can tell you whether or not it's actually been unlocked.
Did you follow all of T-Mobile's steps to unlock the phone?
I recieved this from t mobile. I fall into the first paragraph as im not intending to use a t mobile sim after the phone is unlocked. I have reset the phone numerous times. And the minute i insert my sim im presented with an activation required dialogue box . I then am whisked off to the sim activaion menu where im presented with a message that says incompatible som card and im locked out until i pop the sim tray out. Short of going to t mobile and saying hey moneys paid message sent this phone should be unlocked yet is not please fix this.
so yes I already have tried the “did you turn it on” level steps, and have come to the forums seeking greater knowledge.
