." I thought my upgrader installation being successful was going to take care of it all".

You have to run the upgrader on your iPhoto Libraries to prepare them, as described in the link, not just install it. The iPhoto Library Upgrader will be installed in the folder Applications > Utilities.

After running the upgrader tool on your libraries you should be able to browse them in Photos, if you hold down the options key ⌥ while launching Photos. Keep holding down the key until the library chooser dialog appears.

You are currently running the las version of iPhoto 7.x.x. It cannot be updated beyond this version, but on OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 you need iPhoto 9.6.1. No other iPhoto version will run on this system. But this requires to purchase upgrade, not a free update. But Apple stopped the development of iPhoto and is no longer selling it. There is no longer any way to buy the upgrade to iPhoto '11, version 6.05.tHe last chance to do that has been in 2015, before Apple pulled iPhoto from the AppStore.

If you want access to your iPhoto Library, convert it to a Photos Library and use the Photos.app to browse your photos. Photos is the successor to iPhoto.

To be able to convert your iPhoto 7.1.2 libraries, run the iPhoto upgrader tool. This will prepare your iPhoto Libraries for the migration to Photos. This is described here:

Using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool - Apple Support

After you prepared the iPhoto Library, launch the Photos.app while holding down the options key. This will bring up a library chooser panel. Select your iPhoto Library.

Okay, I’ll give it a try. I did the upgrader bit already though, clueless that iPhoto techinically doesn’t exist anymore. I thought my upgrader installation being successful was going to take care of it all. Do I have to launch photos.app from the keyboard options key in order for it to work? Because I’ve clicked the photo icon on the bottom of my screen after installing the upgrader and I go around and around with prompts telling me to do what I thought I’d already done.

I opened photos with the icon, selected iphoto library and the same thing happened—your version is too old. I’m not exactly sure what I did next, clicking something and holding and pressing option key...? Not sure b/c I wasn’t expecting it to do anything; but a new screen came up Welcome to Photos. I chose to import photos, then had to select all the photos individually from a menu, clicked import and then it said there wasn’t enough disk space to continue. So. Apparently I just need a new computer??? So. Frustrating.

Thank you for trying to help. I kept trying the sequence you said to see if I was missing something, and I finally got to the point that a window told me the upgrader was working, or already in place or something. But still, nothing in photos. I tried again to import, again had to select all the photos individually (shift and clicking) and again, not enough space. So maybe I’ve done all that can be done on this computer?

Many thanks for your assistance.

There aren’t any photos in photo though.... nothing at all is there. I can see no way to open any photos/library within the photo app/icon. I click photos, albums etc and there’s nothing there. To the best of my ability, I have followed all the steps given. I don’t see any way to open old iPhoto/library in photos, and there aren’t any photos in photo so.... where am i disconnected??
