You can view the iOS version via Settings > General > About > Version (12.1.1 is the current up-to-date version)

• Tap Settings.
• In the resulting window tap "general from the list at the left.
• At or near the top of the right pane find and tap "About."

"Version" is about halfway down the resulting list in the right pane.
