Is the 6S recommended as an upgrade to the iPhone 5?

My iPhone 5 with 64GB of memory is out of date. I haven't updated to the latest iOS because each time I updated in the past, the 5 seemed to run even slower. (Currently running ios version 10.3.3)

The first question is, will updating help with processor speed. With some apps that I use it can take up to 15 seconds from the time that I tap the app until it responds. This happens sometimes only if I have not been using the app for an hour or so. After the initial wait, the app then works OK. But as I move from app to app, it can be tedious.

I feel fairly resigned to needing the upgrade. I read somewhere, I think Cult of Mac, that the iPhone 6S was one of the best iPhones. The writer suggested buying that model even though there were many generations since (I think iPhone 8 or X had been just released when I read this). If I buy a 6S it will be new.

My question is, with the iPhone 6S, will I experience a similar slowness now that there have been many generations of iPhones released since the 6S?

I have been considering the XR but the cost is more than I would like to spend right now, unless getting the 6S is a mistake. (Why throw good money after bad) Whatever iPhone that I buy, it will be with 64GB of memory.

I would consider going up one more version to the iPhone 7 and purchasing it from Apple Refurbished section. You will get a great product with a very good 1 year warranty on it and this is a very good model. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/iphone. The iPhone 6S was a good model, but the plus is the Apple Warranty.

iOS 10.3 is as high as your iPhone 5 will go, you cannot update.

Apple no longer sells the iPhone 6s so the odds are you will not be buying a new iPhone. Look for an iPhone 7 or later.

Good to know about the iOS.

Ebay lists some new 6S 64GB phones for around $300. No Apple warranty, though; only 30 days from seller with excellent rating. Thank you. I will check out the later iPhones.

The SE is awesome. This seems like a great, affordable solution with one hesitation. I am reconsidering the smaller screen in favor of a larger one. I am comparing iPhone 7 and 8, and Plus models, too. As the price climbs, I need to keep my eye on how close the cost is getting to the Xr. It seems easy to rationalize always going to the next newer model, as the cost is not that far away from the previous one. All those model seem quite good. Any thoughts that might influence this decision?

I checked out the refurbished phones. Only 1 iPhone 7 with 128GB; the rest were 7plus. Good suggestion. I may go for that 7 though I don't need 128 GB. Thank you.
