Stalled installer

I'm running High Sierra on an old late 2009 Macbook with an SSD and 8 GB of memory. Recently I was prompted to install an operating system update - Security Update 2018-003 10.13.6. When I tried the update, the installer crashed, giving me this message:

I have tried restarting several times, but same result every time. I have got by since then by pressing "option" at startup, and then choosing my internal disk rather than the installer, and everything is fine.

But it would be good to be able to install the update and to save having to do the Option at startup every time.

What should I do please?

The security update was released Dec 5. What do you mean by recently? Are you trying to install from the App Store or from the Apple downloads page? If from the App Store, try the separate download page installer while in Safe Mode.

Thanks. I wasn't able to boot up in safe mode, presumably because it was trying to boot up the installer, but pressing the option key allowed me to boot up normally, and then going to Apple - Support - Downloads did the trick. I don't know why I didn't think of that, but I didn't, so thanks for your advice.
