I received an email that appears to be from myself saying they hacked my email and have been monitoring me for 6 months as well as copied my contacts, passwords etc. and asked for money. I checked my sent messages and didn't see anything. Is this a common scam and are they able to make it appear as though they used my email address?
While it may appear to be from your email address, if you check the actual sender address, you will see it is not. Scammers do this with banks, credit cards, online services, etc all the time to try and get you to reveal user id's and passwords.
Yes, it's a common ransom scam. Ignore it. It's pretty easy to spoof an email address and there's not much you can do. No one can copy your Contacts or passwords remotely.
