There are now over 100 different computers that bear the name MacBook Pro, issued over more than a decade.
Which is yours, by year, early mid late, screen size and processor speed?
What version of MacOS?
press and hold the power button forces an emergency uncontrolled power-down. It is not recommended for routine use because it does Not do an orderly shutdown, and can cause disk issues. It is certainly useful for emergencies.
There are several less drastic steps that can be tried:
• Control-Power-button: display a dialog asking whether you want to Restart, Shutdown, Sleep or Cancel [Return-key will choose Shutdown, Esc will choose Cancel, even if you can not see the dialog box.]
• Control-Option-Command-Power_button: Quit all Apps, then shut down your Mac. If any open documents have unsaved changes you will be asked whether you want to save them.
• Control-Command-Power-Button: Force your Mac to Restart, without prompting to save any open and unsaved documents.

Your issue sounded a little like the Discrete Graphics failure seen in the 2011 MacBook Pro 15-in with dual-graphics.
In a 2009 model, it could be anything.
The answers I received were effective and helpful if, in the future, I experience this again.
Also, solved the immediate issue.
My thanks to you
