partitioned HDD desktop icons

My internal iMac HDD is partitioned into 3 volumes. Is there a way to have ONLY the startup disk volume icon show up on my desktop ?

iMac G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 15" .7GHz , 17" 1.25GHz ,and 20" 1.25GHz

Make an alias to that item, open the Finder's preferences, and set it not to show the drives.

If I do that and then boot from one of the other volumes the new startup disk volume icon won't show up. Right ?

Wrong. The desktop and settings for each OS are stored separately unless two or more OSes have been set to use a single home folder. This needs to be done for each home folder available to the computer.

Are you saying to make aliai (plural?) for each partitioned volume when they are the active startup volume ? if I'm understanding you , I tell finder "show drives',make alias, then don't show drives for each volume and then leave finder "don't show drives ?

Maybe I didn't get it,if I make an aiias of each HDD volume and then check "don't show drives" , I have 3 volume alias icons on my desktop.

You need to change startup drives between each run. The aliases can just be copied between drives, but the Finder's preference setting can't be.

Sorry for being so dense. I boot from vol#1,make alias of vol#1 icon then boot from vol#2,make an alias of vol#2 icon...etc then tell finder don't show disks and then when I switch startup volumes only the active startup volume alias icon will show up on the desktop?

Thanks again Niel,all I have to do now is remember the finder setting when I plug in my external drives and they don't show up.
