After Shut Down, my SIL is still on.

After Shut Down, my SIL is still on and stays on until I turn on the computer again. Computer is definitely off not sleeping, but obviously something is wrong. What can I do?

Thanks,

The sleep indicator light (SIL) on a MacBook Pro remains on automatically as long as your MacBook is closed but still has power running to it. This light can really shine in a dark room when you're trying to sleep and people have tried solutions ranging from putting a piece of tape over the light to covering the MacBook with a blanket. Fortunately you can adjust the power settings so the hard disk powers down when you're not actively using the MacBook, leaving the sleep indicator light off.

  1. Click the apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and select "System Preferences" in the resulting drop-down menu. Select "Energy Saver."
  2. Click on the checkbox next to "Put the Hard Disks to Sleep When Possible." You'll also see a "Computer Sleep" sliding bar, with it taking longer to go into sleep mode when it's all the way to the right and it taking less time to go into sleep mode when it's all the way to the left.
  3. Move the "Computer Sleep" sliding bar until it's all the way to the left. Close the display and the MacBook will go into hibernation mode with the hard disk being powered down. The sleep light should remain off.

Shut down

"When you choose

the Shut Down command, OS X first turns off the GPU. This causes the

display to turn off. When the display turns off, the SIL turns on.

During the few seconds of shutdown, but before power is removed from the

main logic board, the SIL remains on and will not blink. When the

computer is fully shut down, the SIL turns off."
