AirPods battery is not showing the correct capacity

After I fully charge my AirPods the low battery sound plays way before the batteries are close to running out of charge. When I look at the battery on my phone it will say that either one AirPod or both are on around 9% but after placing them in the case and reconnecting the battery goes back up to the correct percentage. Sometimes the AirPod that shows the low percentage will actually stop working (as if it has actually died) until I put it in the case for less than 10 seconds and start using it again.

I’ve had my AirPods since April 2017, and this is quite a recent problem.
