safari app won't quit

My safari app will not quit. I can force quit and the app pops right back on. I have read everything I can find and I'm stuck as to what I've done wrong. Help, please.

I'm running Mohave 14.14.2 on an iMac from late 2015.

Try Force Quit  Safari from Activity monitor.

1. Click the Spotlight icon in the menubar.

2. Start entering Activity monitor in the search bar next to magnifying glass icon.

3. Click Activity Monitor

When Activity monitor window opens:

4. Enter safari in the search box at the top right corner.  Select CPU if not already.

5. Select Safari under Processor Name.

6. Click Force Quit Safari X button.

7. Relaunch Safari holding the Shift key down.

This Malwarebytes program worked for me. I have spent the last day and a half trying to figure out why Safari would keep restarting after quitting and force-quitting and then after my computer went to sleep and I woke it back up, Safari would not respond to anything and I would have to hard restart my computer. The Malware bytes found 4 files that it put in quarantine and everything is back to working normal. Yay!

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Quit/reopen Safari and test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.
