Late 2012 iMac choking on Mojave

I have kept my iMac updated with each new macOS iteration and so I upgraded to Mojave when it became available. Since then, my Mac has become practically unusable. Applications load slowly with some taking over a minute to even BEGIN to start. E-mails come up blank, Safari loads slowly, etc. If this is Apple's way of telling me I need a new Mac, it's pretty crummy. The processor is a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. MacintoshHD is 1TB with 599.65GB free. I have run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior to no avail. Any thoughts, tricks, tips?

But is an almost seven year old iMac worth having a new drive installed?

Not a question I enjoy answering. Some say yes, some say no.

I should be able to install another OS to an external drive for an emergency, yes?

You can install another OS on an external to boot from.
