IPhone 7 plus battery drains at midnight to 1%

I have an iphone 7 plus that all apps and all connectivity has been removed. Setup as new iphone, re-install ios 12.1.2 .

At night battery charge level drops significantly from 100% to approx 70% straight away around 10pm then at midnight drops to 1%.

In the morning i connect to an apple 30w charger and the phone starts to charge very quickly, but when i then hold on/off and volume down battery leaps back to 80%.

i have no wifi, no bluetooth, no apps, no data connections, it is simply used as an ipod.

phone is left in car overnight conneced to usb but this does not remain on, car is a new 2018 bmw so would not provide any drain else the hyper sensitive computer would spot that.

Today with the battery calibration as mentioned, the phone showed 8% charge having charged from 1% then immediately on re-start (on/off volume down) showed 83%.

There is nothing that can drain the battery, all background services are off, no location, no account etc etc, just music content.

That's not a good practice. Are you doing that every nights? Temperature, humidity can affect your battery life.

To feel more comfortable, have your battery / iphone inspected at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider:

Giulio,

i get your point, but, i have had a previous iphone 5 in same setup for many years and never an issue, yet setting an iphone 7 as an ipod by removing / disabling everything should not see with zero activiy as the graph shows a drop from 80% to 1% then with a reset for battery calibration a jump back from a shwon 8% to 83% that cannot be temp etc as it has no effect on the iphone 5.

I’m going to leave in my office tonight to see if the issue remains, if so it wont be weather.

plus lots of people leave ipods or iphones in rheir cars as music players, ive always done this.

my other thought is to connect via a power bank, i have a small griffin brand new powerbank.

thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

I see symptoms that make me think about a "power supply" issue, ie. the fact that sometimes your battery stops charging at 80%.

Apple says: "Your iPhone might get slightly warmer while it charges. To extend the lifespan of your battery, if the battery gets too warm, software might limit charging above 80 percent".

That's why I suggested to have your device/battery/charging port deeply checked by Apple Specialists.

:-)

Best regards.

Giulio

Giulio,

Phone charges normally to 100%, then with zero activity sits at 100% to around 00:00 hours, then drops to 1%.

Assuming at 1% phone was connected to power, phone starts to charge normally, today at 8% i remembered to reset battery calibration at which point phone showed not 8% having charged from 1% but 83% then continued to charge normally with a normal length of time to 100%, the phone is currently since this morning being some 5 hours sat at 100% still.

This scenario occurs each evening hence the screen shot of the chrge state it shows 100% to a sudden drop to 1% to 8% to an immediate jump to 83% left hand and right sides of the graph.

Others have reported similar scenarios, i a, trying to be very specific in description but please look very carefully at the graph...

Rob

Rob, you are detailing your issue very well but, to my knowledge, that's not a normal behavior.

I'm not so tech savvy to understand what's going on with your device (it's difficult to diagnose that behavior remotely). I still recommend that a Apple Specialist take a look at your iP7+ for a deep inspection.

I will try to contact some other members in this Community and ask them if they can help you (better than I can).

Please, stay tuned.

Thanks and regards

Giulio,

Thank you so much, i’m going to make two tests, (1) cool phone at 100% battery carge in freezer protected from moisture to rule out temperature. (2) I also have a perfectly working iphone 6s (work phone) tonight i will place both in the car, the iphone 6 to the cars usb and the iphone 7 alone but in the same location, theoretically if car issue iphone 6 will drain, if cold both will drain, if iphone 7 only it must be the phone alone. I dont think my cars centre console gets cold enough to cause rhe issue, but todays freezer test will...

My suspicion is it is the phone, by placing both side by side tonight it will give a clear comparison.

If others you know have come across this i’d love to hear back.

I’m nervous of repair as by the time ive paid out i might as well get a new ipod (since my iphone is 128gb) but thats £299 so would prefer to try and resolve... i simply want to use this 22 month old iphone as an ipod, up until a month ago when i bought an iphone xs max, this phone was fine.

regards,

rob.

Giulio,

Solved. Temperature.

Placed in freezer for 22 mins, phone screen temp at -11 deg C, internal charge port at +10 deg C, battery was at 100% 22 mins later 1%. Now plugged into mains charger, immediately changes from 1% to 84%. Done battery re-calibration at 84% phone then on restart seconds later shows 99% which for about 25 mins effort 1% drop from start position of 100% to 99% would seem normal.

regards,

Rob.

What is the temperature in the car overnight? If it drops below 0ºC (32ºF) that is the operating temperature limit for the phone. Below that bad things will happen, including sudden battery drain.

What time zone are you in? Which carrier? Some carriers query the phone during the night to get usage statistics. Depending on time zone between midnight and 3 AM.

Other than that the symptom of jumping states of charge mimics a failing battery, no matter what Battery Health says.

IPhone 7 plus battery drains at midnight to 1%
