How can I connect my USB2 external DVD to the USB3 port on my new MacBook Pro?

The USB-C ports are ThunderBolt-3 capable. Many adapters also feature a "bonus" USB port, typically referred to as USB-A [that is their shape] that run at USB-3 or USB-2 speeds.


If you do not need any other adapters, you can get a USB adapter/cable from Apple for around US$20:

The charge cable, generally good for nothing else, is capable of USB in a pinch, but only at USB-2 speeds (Keyboard speed) not drive speeds (USB-3 and better).
