URL Pop-up in Safari

When did Safari start automatically showing a linked url in a small popup window in the lower left of the screen? Or has it been doing this for a while and I'm just not terribly observant?

More to the point, how can I stop it from doing so? (it's kind've unnecessary and annoying)

Try Safari/View/Hide Status Bar.
