I cannot log in to my account because the MBP boots up to another users account and asks for a password. How can I select my account which is an admin account?

If you are unable to log into that account and access System Preferences/Users & Groups to change the Login Options to your account, create a new admin user account using the steps below. Boot into the new account, go to System Preferences/Users & Groups and in Login Options, to change Display login window as a list of users or name and password.
