What happens to emails when you delete a smart mailbox

My wife is concerned that if she deletes the smart mailbox where some messages go, that they will not reappear in the regular mailbox. Do such messages disappear?

Why are deleted emails no longer stored in Smart Mailboxes? I've just noticed that deleted emails are no longer stored in Smart Mailboxes? Is there a way to change back?

They never left the regular mailbox. Smart mailboxes do not move messages from your Inbox. They simply create a different way for you to view those emails so they are all contained in the same place. Much like Albums in the Photos app.
