key came off and won't go back on

Based on what you've described, I'd recommend taking your computer into an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have it physically inspected. Once a Genius or Apple-certified technician has had an opportunity to inspect the keyboard, they can let you know what options are available to fix it.

However, while you waiting to go to Apple Service

you can do following

In System Preference Click on Sound

In Sound click (check) on "Show Volume in Menu Bar"

Now you can use Mouse to control your volume in the top bar.

now apply pressure till you hear the click

best you do that with mac off

That will not repair your key function, it will just put the cover back in place.
