Updating iPhone does not have anything to do with your computer space or storage, if you are talking about the IOS updating. If the iPhone itself does not have enough storage then the updating (IOS) might not become successful. You might have to delete and free some storage. iCloud storage does not have anything to do here. That is the storage for the account not the device. The device itself has to have enough storage.

That means you are trying to make a back up in the computer. Backing up in the computer with the help of iTunes means making an exact copy of what you have on the iPhone. This process requires your computer to have enough storage available so that a copy of the data on your iPhone can be made. Computer storage is most to complete this back up.

But just to update the operating system on your iPhone, this does not apply. You can simply chose to update. Your computer storage does not have anything to do.

There is another way to back up. On iCloud. Settings> your name> icloud> iCloud back up> back up now.

How much storage is used on your iPhone?

I had a similar problem, after I replaced my iPhone 5s with 64GB by an iPhone X with 256GB. The first iPhone backup on my Mac needed 128GB on my Mac, because the iTunes backup included all photos from the iPhone, even with the photos on the iPhone syncing with iCloud Photo library.

Since I did not want to afford more than 100GB for each iPhone backup on my Mac, I switched from iTunes backups to iCloud backups. My Mac has only a 1TB SSD drive, and sacrificing so much storage for iTunes device backups is simply too much. As long as my iPhone had only 64GB of internal storage, I preferred the iTunes backups.

Using iTunes to backup an iPhone has the bonus, that the backup is locally stored and we do not need an internet connection to restore the iPhone. But if you also have an iPhone with 256GB of memory, it may not be feasible to free so much storage on your Mac, that you can make an iTunes backup. If your computer is a desktop computer it is no hardship to move most of your data to external drives, but on a laptop you may want to use the internal storage for the documents ad data you want to be accessible at all times, without external drives connected and not for iOS backups.

I am no expert on this, but as I understand it, a computer or any iOS device will not allow you to use every bit of free space. It needs some wiggle room for file fragmention and other behind the scene tasks. So depending on the size of the HD, 44GB left may not be enough space for this to occur. That may be why you are getring the message on the computer.

As for backing up with iCloud, what happens when you try to initiate a backup manually?

iCloud Storage has nothing to do with storage on your Mac. The only effect it would have is if you used iCloud storage instead of storage on the Mac. In other words, if you weren’t backup up on the Mac and only using iCloud storage, obviously that would free up space on the Mac.

I asked for help in the Lounge which is an area in Apple Support Communities where high level users have access and can post and ask for help from other more knowledgeable users. I am waiting for some help to arrive.

By the way, you can check to see if the phone is backing up to iCloud in Settings>Your Username>iCloud>iCloud Backup. If it is set to On, it should be backing up. It should show you the date and time of the last backup.

I am such a novice at all this. I really need help to get more space on my comp. But I am afraid to delete. Plus I am so confused, I have IPhoto and Photo on my comp, which really takes up the space. Both the same pictures. But afraid to delete anything. I am going to have to get help somehow cleaning this up. Thank you.

So I should just do that on my IPhone? And unplug my phone. I usually charge my phone with comp so my photos can also back up.
My poor comp needs cleaned up and I have no clue.

Thas why why I suggested you post in a Mac forum.

I have IPhotos and Photos in my comp. So I have double. Ever since they added the Photos. That takes up a lot of my space.

I would hate to see you do something that would cause you to lose all of your photos. I don’t feel comfortable enough to guide you through this.

madan115 is suggesting that you back up with iCloud. If you have that many phots to backup, you could exceed the 5GB of free storage and would need to buy more in order to do this.

Did you post in the Mac forum? I will put out a call for help in another part of the forum and see if we can get you fixed up. Hang tight. It might take a while before someone responds to me.
