Mojave: desktop background mocked after crash

I had an issue where my HD ran full, causing very weird behaviour of Mojave. Got this now recovered except one item: I cannot change the background anymore of my 2 screens.

Change image every time is greyed out.

Already found several tips such as deleting "com.apple.desktop.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences but that file isn't even there.

Still looking but if anyone knows how to bring back control to me, please let me know.

Ok, this sounds silly but by coincidence I have found the solution.

In desktop and screensaver I just selected the directory that hold the pictures I want to use.

Next I click on any picture and look, now I can select “change image” and select a time.

And when I do that, the random order also becomes selectable.

So issue resolved.
