How do you set a print area in Numbers version 5.3?

Where is the option to set a print area for a page in Numbers? I only see PRINT under Files and no other option. The problem is that under preview all the pictures inserted in the cells, in spite of being 'locked" have moved.

Any solutions would be appreciated.

Setting a "print area" and the problem of moving images seem to be two separate issues.

Numbers doesn't have the concept of print area, such as you see in Excel. If want to print just part of a sheet you can select the cells, command-c to copy, and in Preview type command-n or File > New from Clipboard. Then print from Preview.

As for moving images, you can click in a cell and paste an image into the cell's background. The image will then move with the cell, and expand or contract as you make the cell bigger or smaller.

Locking doesn't do what you may be thinking it should do. It essentially locks an object to the canvas and makes the object uneditable. A locked table can't be edited, which makes the problem of an image not moving with a cell moot.

Hi Quasar,

This is what I do to create a Numbers Layout Guide for a one-page presentation.

Numbers > Preferences > Rulers

Tick all boxes and leave them ticked. You will be glad that you did!

Numbers Menu > View > Show Rulers

If you like, drag Alignment Guides (the yellow lines) to the right from the vertical ruler, and downwards from the horizontal ruler.

They mark the left and the top margins.

Calculate (or use trial and error) to mark the right and bottom margins.

Insert a rectangle Shape (no fill) and drag to enlarge it to where you have calculated (or guessed) the page margins.

Test with Menu > File > Print... and adjust.

When all is satisfactory, Save as Template for future use with other documents that have the same paper size and margins..

Here is an example

Click on the "Done" button to escape the non-editable Print Setup. Delete the rectangle Shape (temporary page layout guide) before printing to paper or PDF.

Did you remember to Save as Template after all this hard work?

Regards,

Ian.

Thanks for the instructions Ian.

I now have a template to use.

It was also quite helpful to see the printable area with the rulers.

I will insert my images into the cells and go from there.

The original document I was struggling with was 7 pages long- and when ready to print, the

images had moved from the cells they were in.

I am assuming if I insert a page while working on the new template the printing area will stay the same.

Will see what happens once the images are in.

Thanks for your help
