App cost
How can I tell if an app is free and if not how does one know the cost?

That's easy.
Free apps have 'Get' button next to them.
Paid apps have a price tag instead of 'Get' button.
If an app has in-app purchases, you will also see that under the price tag or 'Get' button.

Thanks. But why then do I have to put in the Apple ID and press the side button (Apple Pay) twice? Why not just put in a pop-up reply that says “are you sure you want to download this free app“. Just saying
Apple you are downloading (free or paid) are associated with your Apple ID for the history and backups.
I believe that we have to double-click the side button for authorising download in order to get a unified experience. Back in the days you authorized downloads even free ones with Touch ID, now it's using Face ID.
