If I use external monitor on my mac and my power adapter is not plugged in - mac goes to sleep mode unexpectedly in ~30 sec on close lid event.
I expect:
I can work with the closed lid and external monitor even without plugged power adapter.
(I do not want to waste energy on an unused internal monitor)

Ah sorry, you're right that particular article may not be applicable here.
I agree, it sounds like a feature request to me. Not sure why you would want your notebook running on battery while connected to an external monitor. Closing the lid normally turns the notebook's display off and eventually puts the notebook in sleep mode.

Should it work even theoretically (closed lid + external monitor + no power adapter)?

Why do I need this at all? Good question.
Just because I'm not at home and I have forgotten my power adapter and at the same I need to work more than XXX hours... So, the idea was to use my friend's pc monitor and save battery.
I guess screenshot of Power Adapter setting is not needed in this case.
Anyway, I will check ref you mentioned and let you know if it helps.
