How to set up original iMac on Mac OS 9.2 (iMac G3?)

*How to set up the internet on an original iMac on Mac OS 9.2

It won't connect to the internet, it has a proxy from a university which previously owned the iMac. Help? I turned the proxy off by just unselecting it in the preferences tab for the internet.

(Ignore the iMac line 2012 and later because it won't let me select the old iMac as a device)

edit:

- Also while I'm here, is there a way to factory reset it and do the setup all over again? Its just a bunch of old uni files from 2003 and etc.

- Also if I factory reset it, does it let me register the item to my apple ID? And also will I lose the microsoft office applications if I do?

  • The error message for explorer is "Security failure. The server reply is invalid"
  • It allows me to connect to the servers for updates to mac / acrobat reader which it didn't before the ethernet but still can't connect to explorer due to that error message.

Due to no replies on this also I talked to apple support. They could not help me with the internet problem at all unfortunately (they have no articles / info on these macs) but for my extra two questions they answered:

  • You need the initial CD the iMac shipped with it (in my case it was Mac OS 9.0.3) so I'll have to find that. Also found out from the serial number it is not an iMac G3 it is an iMac DV+ (Summer 2000) special edition
  • As for the factory reset, you can log in with your apple ID I'm pretty sure curtsy of the MKBHD video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F1xmbYucec which they open a iBook G3 and have to register it... but yeah I'm not 100% sure on that one, doesn't look like it really registers for an apple ID, just to your email address since it didn't exist fair enough.
  • As for the microsoft applications, look like if I do reset (which I probably really need to do) I will lose all the microsoft office applications :(

Usually, if a connection to the Internet is made through a LAN port of a router, the setup is not difficult. Typically, in the control panel for TCP/IP, one has to make sure to connect via Ethernet, and configure to use DHCP (let the server automatically provide an IP address). The Mac OS Help should be able to assist.

Please note however that the choice of web browsers for Mac OS 9 is limited. It is often difficult to connect to modern web sites. Plain http is OK per se, but secure sites (https) create problems. Also, web page content handling may be problematic. Old email programs may have difficulties with authentication. FTP clients should be OK.
