Tal vocoder on garageband

Ok. I have a midi keyboard. I have the Tal vocoder popped up on garageband on my mac book pro. It's and older version of garage band. I also have Adobe Soundbooth but don't really understand it well...

When I try to use the Tal Vocoder on Garageband as an effect the track goes dead. No sound. I used the midi keyboard and try to make sound to no avail. I have tried both live and adding the vocoder to a pre recorded track. Nothing. Anybody have a suggestion? I have a feeling that sends and returns are needed and garageband does not have very many options that I am aware of... Like making one track send to another and being able to adjust that new track with the vocoder as it is recording? I really don't know... Any thoughts?
