I want to connect my 2012 MacBook Pro to a new Sony Smart TV and apparently an HDMI connection is required.
My laptop doesn't have an HDMI port.
Other than buying a new computer, would it be possible to make the connection via an HDMI/USB or Thunderbolt cable - if there is such a thing?

Do you have the Mid 2012 Retina or non-Retina model MacBook Pro?
I'm guessing that you have the non-Retina model as the Retina one does come with a single HDMI port. If that's the case, you can get HDMI using a third-party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Something like the following: Belkin 4K Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter - Apple
