Strange symbols during start up

Hello everyone,

Today whilst I was starting up my Mac this evening these symbols were flashing on my screen against a grey background. I turned my laptop off and started it up again and thankfully they disappeared. However, I was wondering if anybody knew what they meant?

Late 2012 Mac Mini random restart and prohibitory symbol (circle with line through it) Late 2012 Mac Mini randomly restarted and displayed the prohibitory symbol (circle with line through it). A Mac user since 1984, I’ve never seen this symbol. I backup with Time Machine to an external drive. Did it try to update the OS? I did not update, so I am a version it two behind, but I can’t determine the OS. Please advise.

Help! Cannot Reboot iMac A message popped up on my iMac (running Catalina) indicating that updates that were installed during the night required that the computer be restarted. While going through the start-up sequence, the screen displayed a "small circle with a slash through it". After waiting about 40 minutes with the symbol still remaining, I shut down the computer using the power button. When I restarted, again, the computer went through the normal start-up sequence. After a couple of minutes, the same symbol was displayed. I never experienced anything like this before. Could someone please help? Thank you so much.

That's Target Disk mode. The symbols represent the interfaces it can be used with(Thunderbolt and FireWire).
