I volunteer outside the United States. Can the trusted phone number be for a phone in a non-US country?

two factor authentification. How to switch it OFF? For some reason, I cannot turn it off, but, as I travel to different countries, I cannot get an access to my phone number, registered with an Apple ID and need to turn it OFF for god sake! Can it be done exceptionally? Or get any other possibility to do verification, for example via e-mail address? But preferably to turn this thing completely OFF!

I think that should work as long as you add the number to your Apple ID.
