File extensions keep reappearing

I have checked and unchecked the "Show all filename extensions" box in Finder preferences. I have checked the "Hide extension" box in the Get Info window multiple times, but every time I save, my .docx and .xlsx file names reappear. When I reopen the Get Info window, the "Hide extension" box is no longer checked, and I really, really don't want to have to check that individually for every file I create anyways. What is going on? How can I actually hide all my extensions? Is there some deeper level of advanced preferences or some hidden setting that is making these particular file names reappear every time I save or copy a document?

Other filenames, such as .pdf and .key are perfectly well-behaved and stay hidden like they are supposed to. I do have an older version of Microsoft Office (2011). Perhaps that has something to do with it?

Hi there! Below is a link to a discussion regarding how to create an Automator script which will supposedly hide ALL of your file extensions. Actually, in looking at it real quick, I think it might actually be a clickable shell script. That is why it has the ".command" file extension, instead of the ".sh" file extension.

Please let me know if this is helpful, or even resolves your issue. Thanks, my friend!

That is certainly possible. It's no longer supported. Given that other file names are unaffected, it seems to be the likely culprit. Consider using Apple's equivalents (Pages, Numbers) or other open-source options. Some are free, others are nearly so, and the all read and write their Microsoft counterparts.
