2011 mac volume issue

My macbook's volume keys are not working. The volume shows up on the screen with a crossed out circle over it. Is there a way to fix this.

Reboot the Mac is the first attempt.

>System Preferences>Sound

Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup.app

Try resetting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
