Toggle off/on home sharing on Apple TV and iTunes
Check any security software installed on computer
If on wifi try Apple TV on ethernet
To see a current status of the network get a report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks
Test on another network

Home Sharing should be ‘on’ on both devices: on the Apple TV and on the computer with iTunes. iTunes should be running. Both need home sharing active with the same Apple ID.
Use Home Sharing to share iTunes content with other devices - Apple Support
Distance between Apple TV and router will leave room for issues like interference. You will have to run a diagnostics report as above to troubleshoot the Wifi network. You can also test at another location.
Again thank you. I now seem to have corrected the problem. Was told it might be a firewall problem and so switched off M'soft fire wall, and then the connection was made - switched the fire wall back on and the pc-apple tv connection still ok !

Than you, but I'm afraid no help! have to use WiFi, can't easily make ethernet connection to the tv I want to use
