i took 8 photos of handwritten pages of information that I need to access frequently. I’d like to be able to click on an icon on home screen that would open the photo album with those 8 photos in it.

You could use the Shortcuts app to do that. You may need to update to iOS 12 to download it. If you had the Workflow app (now Shortcuts), you could use that in iOS 11 to do the same thing.
The 2 actions needed are:
Find Photos Where
Album is (name of album photos are in).

Workflow was brought out by Apple. Now called shortcuts. I doubt it would still work as workflow on any phone. As advised download iOS 12 to run shortcuts. Unless you have a reason not to upgrade.
You can add straight to shortcuts. If you update to iOS 12
You might be better off saving them to the Notes app, or get the Evernote app which is really outstanding for this type of need.
