i have seriously contemplated installing iOS 3.1.3 on the iPhone 4 just to see if ALL THE PROBLEMS related w/the iPhone 4 go away!.. (yes, u could say i'm a bit impatient over the anticipated iOS 4 update, but it's more curiosity)..
what do you guys think? (besides losing the multi-tasking...) do u think the old OS will install on the iPhone 4???
No a downgrade will not work, as each build is specific to the device, and would have to be tailored to the iPhone4. iPhone builds between devices are different (e.g. iPod, iPhone 2g, 3g, 3gs) which there is no such package built for iPhone4 on 3.1.3 or anything prior to iOS4 that is out for the public. Perhaps Apple has one internally as they were developing the device, but doubtful you would get Alpha development software.

well this is kind of like when ppl discovered fire..i bet they got burned trying to start it, but look now..we have fire to cook our meals haha. i just want to know. i wont try it because i dont have the iphone 4 otherwise i would try it for sure
Even if it were possible I don't see a reason for it. I am running iOS4 on my 3GS and I have no problems at all. Everything is works aside from a few apps that the developers still need an update for. My battery life is the same as before, basically I can find no problems on my 3GS after update to iOS4 since its release. The added upgrades on iOS4 is very much worth it too me. I can only imagine how much better iOS4 is on the iPhone 4 which I hopefully arrives in a week.
Whether it's technically possible or not I'm not sure. Apple says it's not possible to instal any previous version of the iOS on an iPhone 4. Even if it was they wouldn't officially support it. I wouldn't recommend downgrading as it's risky and you may permanently damage the phone.
1. No IPSW for 3.1.3 on the iPhone 4 (this could possibly be worked around with proper coding changes inside the IPSW.
2. The BIG problem is that apple has to sign upgrades for the device, That's why you have to have your SHSH blobs backed up to downgrade on a 3gs/3g/2g, Since there is no SHSH blobs for your iPhone 4 on 3.1.0/1/2/3 you will never get it to restore with iTunes and since no one has come up with a custom way to install IPSW's you could never do it. Interesting idea but not plausible.
oh okay i get it. kind of like how when apple comes out with a new os it has different types of this firmware each for the different idevices, am i correct, eg you cant use a 3.1.3 3gs ipsw for a 3g?
oh yeah the 4ios works great on my friends 3gs and iphone 4. i have the 3g and it is terrible haha the 3g is getting outdated anyway so i think it is time to upgrade to iphone 4
