How can I force ‘find my iPhone’ to refresh?

How can I force ‘find my iPhone’ to refresh? I can see the location of the phone I’m looking for but when I try to refresh it to update the location the refresh wheel button won’t work. It sometimes works to force quit the app and open it again but that shouldn’t be necessary. Why would they have built in a refresh wheel if it’s nonfunctional? My family member can travel quite a distance in the many minutes between first locating him and when I can get the location to refresh.

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I can see that you're trying to use Find My iPhone to locate a family member, and it's not refreshing frequently enough for you. Did you know with Family Sharing, you can share the location with Find my Friends and Messages on an iPhone? Check out this article for more information: Share your location with your family.
