Imovie fails to export. "Error is null!"

IMovie fails to export to file or to theater. I get the message: Export fail. Error is Null!

I've reinstalled IMovie, created a new library and transferred the project, deleted all effects out of the project, looked for conflicting audio. I am still not able to export. What else should I try?

I'm using a Macbook.

running 10.1.10

Thank you!

Often deleting preferences will resolve share out problems. Try restarting your computer and opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.

Try exporting using the Best Quality (pro res) setting. That will give you a .mov file versus the Mp4/AAC file that you would get will all other settings. Sometimes that helps with share problems. You will get a 4x larger file of better quality.

You can also try booting up in Safe Mode (see Help Menu for instructions). Then, after everything has finished loading, immediately shut down and start up in normal mode. See if that helps.

Try opening iMovie in a new user account, such as the Guest account on your Mac. See if that cures it.

Update to current versions iMovie 10.1.10 and Mojave if you haven't done so already.

Is your iMovie library on an external drive? If so, what is the format of the drive? It should be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Control-click on the drive's icon and select Get Info to see. Note: Reformatting a drive erases all data on it, so back up any data that you want to keep before reformatting.

Unfortunately I've never used an editing software other than iMovie so I am not in a position to recommend any other apps.

You might consider taking your computer into a local Apple store to talk to someone at the Genius Bar. They have testing equipment there and perhaps a hands-on approach is what is needed.

Thanks Rich. It still isn't working. I went ahead and deleted all old projects and the old library. I followed your procedure and imported a new and different video to avoid confusion. I Renamed it and tried to Share to File. I got the same two messages: Share Failed. and Error is Null! under details.

Any other ideas? I'm new and just starting. so no need to rescue an old project at this point.

Thanks again.

Kim

Sadly, nothing has worked. I've tried everything you suggested.

This is a new computer to me. Its a 2012, and I had installed new ssd drive and 16 gig Ram. It is running Mojave and Imovie is also current. Is it too old to run Imovie? Could something in the installation confused itself?

The video was shot with my Iphone. Do i need to do anything special when shooting video intended to be imported to Imovie?

Is there another video editing software you might recommend? I just want something easy and that works.

Thanks in advance,

kim
