iMovie 10.1.10 and how to export for dvd

So I've just upgraded my trusty iMac to MacBook Pro 2018 with Majave and iMovie 10.1.10. I'm a keen photographer and loved making family movies on iMovie to enjoy on DVD for the family... I spend HOURS doing them!

Can't even express how disappointed I am that it seems apple has made it near impossible for us to use iMovie to make projects to share with our family on anything that isn't apple.. I'm sorry I'm not a millionaire so will not be rushing out to by a new tv etc! I really didn't think a DVD was too much to ask..

Anyway.. after hours of reading forums, researching I have the program Burn on this Mac now too. I have the external drive (no, not apple that was twice the price - LG which should do the job just as well apparently). But the .mov file gave errors due to `encoding' issues.. so downloaded videosolo to try. It converts .mov to .mp4 in a variety of HD formats and did it well, which worked on the MacBook. Then Burn needs to convert it again, and almost halves the file size (?). But great! I have a DVD.. no hang on, it doesn't work when putting in my DVD player...

My photography I can still do on my iMac that is 10 years old (bless) but to think I've spend almost $4000 on an `upgrade' that lets me make amazing movies, that I can't share?? Is beyond me... surely I'm missing something?!?!

Please help!

Thank you

Hi,

First, check your Burn program and make sure that it is burning a movie DVD and not a data DVD. Data DVDs play on a computer, but not on a DVD Player. As QuickTimeKirk points out, you need an authoring program like iDVD or Roxio Toast to burn a movie DVD. If your DVD plays on your computer but not on your DVD player, then this likely is your problem.

If the above does not apply to your situation, possibly your DVD player is defective (try other DVDs in it or try playing your DVD on a friend's player).

It could also be that you burned the DVD on a disc that your player doesn't recognize. Standard DVD-R discs are the most universally playable.

Finally, possibly your burner is defective.

Yes I've used burn alot on my other mac so settings should be right. Burner is brand new so hoping not detective! I'll run some more tests for data disks as well, which is also what I need it for. My dvd player plays all other DVDs so will double check on someone else's but shouldn't be the issue.

My next option is to check out roxio and remove burn which used to work :-(

So I tried DVD Creator Lite.. says it does all I want it to do and is compatible.

I tried adding the .mov file from my desktop into the program and error `This file doesn't contain any valid video stream'

I tried 2 different files. They play perfectly fine on the desktop.

It still looks to me like iMovie has made a file that no other program recognises. I'm happy to pay for Roxio, but there is no trial version so I can test it.

so I've tried the .mpg files that another program converted for me and all seemed to be going well..

it gets me to an ISO file, gives good instructions on how to burn from here.

BUT, (after 10minutes of trying to `right mouse click' on this darn touch pad) get to Open with, option required, Disk Utility.

Well, does not appear so search for it. Find Disk Utility which is greyed out as NOT an option.

I am so over this and about to take this Mac back...

Any other ideas before I march this stupid machine back into a shop and get my hard earned money back? And go back to PC!! Seriously.. a DVD to watch with the family is all I wanted :-(

I deleted the ISO file (as I"m trying to clean up all the mess after every failed attempt) but found settings where I could create DVD file. DVD Creator did that, audio and video folders looked good.

Then it seemed I had to put the files into Burn (so program 3 to make this happen) but burned a DVD.

DVD did not work on Mac or tv.

I'm checking with the LG mob if the burner needs software updating or something...

So far, I need three programs.

  1. Videosolo to convert .mov to .mp4
  2. DVD Creator to convert to DVD format and
  3. Burn to actually burn the CD

I truly appreciate your help so please don't think my frustrations are at you at all (I appreciate the help!!) but my head is seriously struggling with how difficult this process has become.

This is my 3rd week trying to work this out and I'm all out of DVD's so have to get more today... and try again when I'm ready.

Clearly I'm not a quitter...

After my last entry did my `clean up' of failed attempts and found another program I downloaded that I hadn't tried yet...

Wondershare DVD creator.

Well bugger me it accepted the .mov file, did its thing (not even with any converting??) right through to burning a DVD.

It works! Its good quality too.

That was a trial version with a huge watermark so I'm going to run some more tests then purchase it and write a summary here that I hope with save others from going through everything I have.. but progress :-)
