iPhone -> computer backup problem/issue

For the last 6+ months I have neither been able to back my my iPhone to my new-ish computer nor have I been able to update it via cable. I met with one of your team members at the local Apple store and they urged me to contact you folks to help fix this problem/issue. Thx
