Old messages showing up on home screen after being opened

I recently bought an iPhone XS after having an iPhone 7 for a few years. I set it up as a new phone to get a fresh start, and I’ve noticed that when so receive new text messages in a group message, it displays them on the lock screen. If I scroll down, it will show me messages from over a month ago. I believe this means that by opening the message app, even though these old messages should have been marked as read, my phone believes I never saw the messages. The only way I can clear them is to swipe right in each one and tap clear. Is there any way to disable the display of these very old messages? I’ve searched around but cannot find a solution.

iPhone XS, 12

1. When you use Messages in iCloud or turn on iCloud Photos, your content is automatically stored in iCloud. That means they're not included in your iCloud Backup.

You are seeing messages stored in iCloud.
