App Store Games - in app purchase

Hello all,

Is it just me or all (almost) games lately on the App Store are just working to empty your pockets?

I have the following issue: installed (free) Mushroom Wars 2; great little game, love it.

I ended up paying about 15-20$ to unlock some campaign. I said it’s worth it. Just a few days later I discovered the other campaigns are to be paid AGAIN. Well, I didn’t ... so I do no have the full game, which is kinda silly expensive in this case (the game, the situation).

Later on, I discovered online multiplayer. I played for a few weeks, also buying some (1$-5$) in game coins/gold to be able to use the game with magic, like all multi-players do. Otherwise you won’t be able to really play. So step by step I ended up paying 150$, just to keep the game rolling. If you don’t pay, no problem, you can multiplay with no magic, which is like losing before you started; pretty pointless. I did not buy into that at all.

I know, my own fault spending so much. It’s the first time I spent more than 60$ on a game, and that was on Playstation, for a huge full game (battlefield, not a crapy single screen game with no real graphics).

Still, I did requested a refund from Apple, which I just got. 150$.

To come back to the title of this post: almost all games are like this: pay 1$ for something, pay another $ for something else. This makes me crazy, especially with my 3 kids who are asking me all day long to unlock/pay for some parts of the game (usually in-game coins).

I would gladly pay 10-20$ for a great game, but THAT’S IT!

At least, I feel I should know from the start how much is the FULL game, don’t make me keep buying into the same game over and over just to be able to keep playing ..

First, what can I do to stop spreading this kinda games on the app store.

Second, please let me know if by any chance you found a paid game that won’t do the same, in the strategy category (like Mushroom Wars)- RTS games.

It's the nature of the beast. Game app developers commonly use the In-App purchases technique. Any app that you are going to purchase indicates if there app is "supported" by In-App purchases. If they are, then you are undoubtedly going to be spending additional money. Not all of them change the performance level if you don't make In-App purchases. Words for Friends, for example, can be fully played without spending a dime - ever. But, most of them are built on the In-App purchase paradigm.

If you want to be a gamer, expect to spend money.

Well, again, that is simply not how they do it. It's the same no matter what platform you use - iOS, Android, Mac, PC. The entire industry is geared toward that model. Just a fact of life 🙂

And I was no way implying that you were trying to play the games for free. Only that because that is the business model, you aren't going to find any resolution. It's just the way that particular model works.
