First Apple ITunes Gift Card

How do I use the gift card to pay for ringtones? I just tried and it didn't give me the option to add the card as a form of payment.

Redeem the card onto the account : Redeem App Store & iTunes Gift Cards and content codes - Apple Support

The account's balance should automatically be used for your purchases (you can't specify how items are paid for)
