Mac Pro 3,1 – Dark screen, then freezing, then Fans go maximum, Red RAM lights flash on boot

Now I realize that this has been discussed in the past without a lot of closer or conclusions, this typically happens soon after the user login. In safe mode it does take longer but still eventually happens. which is the most curious part since it feels like a hardware issue. I've swapped V Cards, RAM, even Power supply and Boot drives. Removed all un necessary hardware – DVD, Bluetooth card, Wifi card, externals, internal drives.

One question I have about these 3,1 machines, besides what's causing these darn crashes – Is it normal to see the red lights flash breifly on the memories boards briefly during startup. If they stayed on clearly there is a problem but these flash quickly during startup and stay off. I've tried different RAM combos and the minimal RAM using two different sets of Modules I have. 8 x8s and 8 x4s. Always get the red flashing no matter what.

Thoughts? This is a Dual 3.2 GHz 8C machine.

Really some component is is heating up and when it overheats the MP freezes. For components on the one could remove the drive sleds and use an infrared camera/viewer to look for overheating.

There could also be a component in the power supply overheating. That is hard to find and best method is to change out the power supply. One could also monitor the voltage of each output and see if a sudden change correlates with the freezing.

If you can get it to be stable long enough, the information is any .panic reports may prove helpful. These are located at:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

They should be files with date&time and ending in .panic

Please do not post more than 20 lines from applications crashes or hangs. They are interminable and not useful for this type of debugging.

If you have already substituted known-good graphics cards and have the same problems, then we need to see some .panic reports from:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

you are looking for reports with date&time ending in .panic

Please do not post Hang reports or Application panics -- they are interminable and have no more than 20 lines worth of information useful for this sort of debugging.

If its a heat sensor related to the PCIe port where the Graphic card resides - this would make sense as it is not using the full resolution of the graphics card so heating would take longer. I believe I will replace the mother board – why not – tried everything else – once I get a spare few hours – the take apart on these MPs is time consuming – Perhaps a futile effort for an aging Mac Pro but must be done. Our studio runs on mostly Mac Pros 5,1s and 6,1s all still going strong. We even have a MP 1,1 Filemaker server that has run 24/7 for 15 years in our server room – Never crashes! What work horses these machines are!

Thank you, just trying to eliminate all possibilities to come to a conclusion. Do you have any recommends on trouble shooting the dark screen crashes. I call them that because the the screen goes to black and and then the fans slowly begin to increase to maximum speed. I can always boot up and get through the logon screen. Once I begin any diagnostics or installations it will crash. It is letting me download software and some general tasks. always eventually crashes.

I went to the standard GeForce GT 120 512MB to trouble shoot - It had a 5770 flashed card in it originally. I also tried a working 5870 Mac version which also had the same issue. I tried a Nvidia GeForce GT 640 2GB card that runs without power cables - same results. All cards were tested in both 16x PCI slots. I originally felt this was going to be a quick fix as I assumed the that original 5770 was going bad and with the black screens it felt like a video issue.

Ah, well, I have the same issue. The fans kick in after a short while.

I have pressed the diagnostic button once fans kick in, and I get STBY and EFI lit. No power, no GPU, no errors on CPUs.

I have re-pasted my CPUs and the northbridge in case these were overheating.

Alas, I was upgrading and now I am in the middle of the El Capitan install, so I can do very little. It lasted enough to download el Capitan, but then it fails when I begin the install, and quite fast, too.

I have tried to use an SSD as well as an HDD.

I have a 5780 GPU. Re-seated. All RAM contacts cleaned, as well as the risers.

Zapping the PRAM did seem to make it last longer. I mean not so briefly.

I am tempted to dig out Snow Leopard and try to install that and work my way forward.

If anyone has any further thoughs or advice, it would be most welcome.

The curious part of this issue for me is that 'safe mode' allows me do run diagnostics and things that I can't run with the full boot. Removing auto login items helped a bit. Always eventually freezes after the screen goes black. Also, as I mentioned I removed all externals and internal components to zero in on potential hardware issues - this helped a bit but always resulted in the eventual black screen freeze. I did change the power supply - this also delayed freezing but still we had the eventual freeze event.

My question is: If its a hardware issue why is the 'safe boot' effecting the freeze event so dramatically?
