Icons in folder not shifting

This is a persistent problem that I've been having that is quite aggravating...

After deleting an item in a folder, the other icons do not shift over to fill that void. Even after closing the folder and reopening it, there is still a void. This is particularly annoying when dealing with masses of photographs, for example.

Is there a way to fix this? (Short of manually shifting all the files up...) Thanks!
