I'm disappointed with apples new airpods because one day I was charging them and it was getting really got and it started to burn and I would honestly would want a pair of airpods or atleast an iPhone xs max to not just throw away my money in the trash for something that wasn't ready to be out for the public.
Sounds like you may have a defective pair, return to Apple for replacement (in the US you can do so in the first 14 days) or set up a time to have a genius look at them under warranty. - http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
