If you have Two-Factor Authentication for your Apple ID, and a device with older software, then the procedure is a bit special:
FAQ #9: What if I use two-factor authentication on a device running older software?
If you use two-factor authentication with devices running older OS versions—like an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)—you might be asked to add your six-digit verification code to the end of your password when signing in. Get your verification code* from a trusted device running iOS 9 and later or OS X El Capitan and later, or have it sent to your trusted phone number. Then type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field.
There is a time limit before the code expires, so request your code (or a new code*) after entering the characters of your password, to use those precious seconds effectively for just the code.

As stated above, if you are using an older device you will need to enter the password and code together. However, to avoid the time limit it's best to enter the password and then request the code, and add it to the end of the password

If you attempted to enter both the password and code then you likely exceeded the time limit. It's best to enter the password, then request the code and add that to the end of the password.
In some cases a hard reboot (unplug ATV and reconnect) may be necessary.
Not sure what that has to do with Apple TV or my response above. There are times when it will require reauthentication, it is for security purposes.
As as far as the Apple TV, if you follow the suggestions provided it will work.
I tried that and it didn’t work
Got the code, where is the field to enter the code?
Another user received this advise: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8597037
Was sitting with my iPad on May lap. Replying to these messages, using the same iPad even when I say to trust this browser (Safari) I STILL have to do two step verification.

Never recieved a reply
I have not idea how I missed that but your last reply was loud and clear and it WORKED! So thankful.
