What is a widget? Is a widget an application?

Dashboard contains "widgets" on MacAir.

What are they; applications?

MacBook Air 13", 10.14

I deleted a third party app, but its widget did not get removed I added a third party app to check the temprature on my mac (iStat Menu), and when I deleted the app and all its files it did not delete the widget with it. What can I do? I tried restarting my computer but that did not work.

Shortcut app for Mac Im a little lat to the party. I am unable to locate the shortcut app in the App Store. I have a MacBook Pro. Anyone where I might be able to find it?
