Have you restarted your computer?

iTunes up to date? Get the latest version of iTunes - https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201352

Locate and view your connected device in iTunes - https://support.apple.com/HT203060 - "After you connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Apple TV to your computer, you can view it and access its settings in different areas of iTunes depending on the version you're using."

If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - https://support.apple.com/HT204095

Device not listed immediately after upgrade - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6573744 - try restarting

Check you are using the original or Apple replacement cord. Some third party cables only transfer power and no data signal.
