What you seek was both an upgrade to Apple applications to recognize capitalization of first words of sentence, and to the operating system itself (through a selection in Keyboard : Text panel) in a later release of macOS than El Capitan.
The only Apple application that runs on El Capitan that allows you to toggle this capability — did so independent of the operating system, and through the Pages '09 v4.3 Preferences : Auto-Correction : Fix capitalization selection.
The third-party Service — WordService — in the Mac App Store has a service named Initial Caps of Sentences, that for a given selection of multiple sentences, will make the first letter of every sentence uppercase.
