Target Display Mode problem. When I connect to iMac only wallpaper shows but not the desktop

I have connected my 2014 MacBook to a late 2014 imac and connected them via Thunderbolt cable. Pressing Command-Fn- F2 causes the screen on the iMac to change to the MacBook background screen, but does not display any desktop files or command lines. Any ideas how to fix this?

Sounds like your Macbook is using the iMac as an extended desktop rather than mirroring.

Go to System Preferences->Displays-> Arrangement->Mirror Displays and check the checkbox.
