iCloud back up on a Mac

Hi,

I received an email from Apple about issues with the SSD on some 2017 Macbook Pro's, i need to book it in for them to reconfigure the hard drive.

I obviously need to back up my data as everything get swiped in the process.

Currently i use icloud to sync my photos, desktop and documents to the cloud.

Will this save my current Macbook settings?

Is there a way to store my configuration data in the cloud?

Or is the only way through Time Machine?

I know ios handles this very well and will have my restored phone as an exact replica of the previous device, just wondering how this goes on macOS.

Thanks!

Hi julian8109,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! I understand you have questions regarding backing up your MacBook Pro to iCloud. I'm happy to assist you with this. iCloud works different with Mac computers. iCloud doesn't back up your configuration and settings the same way it does with iOS devices. It will store the things that you have selected in System Preferences > iCloud only. A Time Machine backup is the way to go when backing up your Mac.

Here's what iCloud backs up: What does iCloud back up?

I hope this helps. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities, and have a great day!
