Is it true that if your apple headphones have a shortage that you can take them to the apple store and get another pair for free?

Possibly, but that would only be if the Apple technician determines that the short was caused by a manufacturing defect and within one year of the date you purchase your iPhone. Otherwise, replacement EarPods cost around $29 USD.
